Shut down on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 in protest of SOPA/PIPA

The Issue

To put it mildly, the future of the Internet is at stake.

For those who are unaware, SOPA and the Protect IP Act are the respective Senate's and House of Representative's bills to censor "foreign content from outside of the United States". However, if passed, these bills would effectively take down massive blocs of streaming material, effectively shuttering YouTube, Google, Facebook, and countless other sites across the world.

Now, the Internet is fighting back.

On Wednesday, January 18th, 2012, Reddit--one of the most viewed websites in the world (2 billion page views a month) is planning a full blackout of their site from 8am to 8pm.

As admirable of a step as this is, however, there is much that can be done to help further spread the message.

This is where the aforementioned sites that could be shut down come into play.

On behalf of concerned citizens across the United States and the world, I ask Facebook, Google, and YouTube to stand with Reddit and the countless other sites in danger by imposing a day-long blackout on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012.

Although the loss of service for sites like these are hard to bear, this is only for a day. If SOPA and the Protect IP act pass, who knows how long they'll be blacked out for?

Please, do your part. Do what's good for not only for the users of your websites, but for Internet users everywhere.
