    1. Mayor Michael Bloomberg

Every child deserves equal access to a quality public education. Public education is a cornerstone of our democracy in the United States of America.

Unfortunately, under Mayor Bloomberg's mayoral control, the New York City school system has deteriorated. Mayor Bloomberg's corporate reforms, countless reorganizations of the New York City Department of Education and appointment of non-educator cronies has devastated America's largest school system of 1.1 million students. We, the parents, demand change now!

Equal Access to a Quality Public Education for All Children

Dear Mayor Bloomberg:

We, the parents of New York City public school children, write this letter to demand you immediately provide every child equal access to a quality public education.

As the real stakeholders in our children's education, we hold you accountable to ensure our children are educated and able to compete in the global marketplace. Unfortunately, under your leadership, parents have been excluded from participating in their children’s education and most recently on your weekly radio show on WOR-AM (710) you stated:

“Unfortunately, there are some parents who just come from... they never had a formal education, and they don’t understand the value of education.” We beg to differ.

For the past nine years, under your leadership, only 23% of New York City high school graduates are college ready. The racial achievement gap has increased and communities of color have been divided.

Your track record as the “Education Mayor” is abysmal. Your many reorganizations of the Department of Education, your appointment of
Cathie Black and the corporate reforms you have implemented without the input of the real stakeholders – the parents, have been destructive to the education of our children.

We, the parents, demand you invest the much needed money and resources in our public education system. Our children deserve:

1. To be college ready
2. To be able to compete in the global marketplace
3. For their parents to be full partners with you in our children’s education

Respectfully yours,
New York City Public School Parents
