Pennsylvania State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe has led a continuous campaign against the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) people in Pennsylvania for ten years. He has called LGBT people sinful and not normal, and recently refused to honor the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness month, because he thought doing so would cater to what he calls "the homosexual agenda."

Bashing LGBT people, and selling short victims of domestic violence to fit a political agenda is no way to lead. It's time to let State Republican Party leaders in Pennsylvania know that Rep. Daryl Metcalfe is doing a disservice both to their party and to voters. With Pennsylvania unemployment at over eight percent, not to mention a host of other issues like education and health care weighing on the state, Rep. Metcalfe's actions are a distraction, and are bringing politics to an all-time low level. It's time to rebuff his divisive brand of politics, and focus on what really matters to voters.

This petition will be sent to State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, PA House Minority Leader (and the highest Republican official in the State House) Rep. Sam Smith, and Republican Caucus Chairwoman Rep. Sandra Major. It's time to let all three know that gay bashing and selling out victims of domestic violence is no way to legislate.

Domestic Violence Shouldn't Be a Victim of Rep. Metcalfe's Gay Bashing

Dear Representative

Nearly two million women and men are victims of domestic violence each year. Unfortunately, instead of honoring these victims with a symbolic measure making October "Domestic Violence Awareness Month," Pennsylvania State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe has chosen to use victims of domestic violence to push an anti-gay political agenda. This is both an embarrassment to the Pennsylvania Republican Party, and voters.

Since taking office, Rep. Metcalfe has used his position as state legislator to push for fringe positions on a host of anti-gay measures, from hate crimes to marriage. He has used his position as Representative to preach homophobia rather than act in the best interest of his constituents. And now his behavior is threatening to tarnish the Pennsylvania Republican Party -- if it hasn't already.

Does the Pennsylvania GOP believe that victims of domestic violence are part of what Rep. Metcalfe would call "a homosexual agenda" ? Is the Pennsylvania GOP more concerned with whether two men or two women enter into a relationship, then they are with high unemployment numbers, education, infrastructure and a host of other issues that are far more important to voters? Is that Pennsylvania GOP going to sit idly by while Rep. Metcalfe becomes the spokesperson for the Party?

To be clear, regardless of Rep. Metcalfe's personal politics, his behavior in selling out victims of domestic violence is shameful. There's absolutely no reason not to honor victims of domestic violence with a symbolic measure. Two million people are abused each year through acts of domestic violence; presumably this is something the Pennsylvania GOP would like to see brought to an end.

It's time to stop the grand-standing of Rep. Metcalfe for the sake of pushing an anti-gay agenda. His brand of politics are bringing down the Republican Party, they're bringing down the voters in his district, and simply put, they amount to nothing more than peddling discrimination and bigotry. The Pennsylvania GOP should demand better.
