End the practice of shackling pregnant women!

The Issue

Currently there is no legislation banning the shackling of pregnant women held with in the Dept. of Corrections in Massachusetts. 15 states currently have banned the shackling and restraint of pregnant women and Massachusetts is poised to become the next to pass this important legislation with HB 02234. Although the majority of incarcerated women are non-violent offenders, women are often shackled by the ankles, wrists, bellies or to another person during transport to and from facilities.

This is not only a human rights violation, it is also a health risk. Health care providers including the American Academy of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have come out in support of ending the restraint of pregnant inmates and putting a stop to this outdated and barbaric practice.

This is a concrete step that we can take today without financial hardship on the state or Department of Corrections. Shackling and lack of prenatal care is a human rights violation for mother and child. This legislation will unify policy and strengthen Massachusetts families!  Please sign today!
