Encourage School Gardens in Montgomery County, MD
The Issue
More and more folks are recognizing that school gardens not only boost local food security, they promote healthy eating and can serve as living learning centers for kids and teens. First Lady Michelle Obama pushed school gardens through her Let's Move! initiative, a plan to eliminate childhood obesity within a generation. Washington, D.C. recently made school gardens a vital part of its Healthy Schools Act, while Arlington County, V.A. boasts 25 vegetable plots throughout the city's schools.
Montgomery County, M.D., however, refuses to let its gardens grow. The city's school officials consistently discourage schoolyard gardens, citing concerns like pests and allergies. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) recently proposed establishing a garden at Takoma Park Elementary School. School officials flat out refused the proposal, much to the dismay of parents and sustainable foodies.
School gardens can serve as a crucial educational tool for teaching students about healthy eating and eco-friendly gardening. These sustainable food operations should be encouraged--not snubbed by officials. Sign our petition asking Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jerry D. Weast to encourage school gardens.
