The Issue
I think it should be illegal for potential employer to use credit reports as a hiring tool to determine if they should hire an applicant. I just got denied a job because my credit report contained inaccurate information, I disputed the information but it takes 45 days for them to investigate and correct the errors, so how can employers make judgment on something that is not even accurate? I think checking a person’s credit report is a form of discrimination against a person and should not be used to determine to hire a potential employee. A credit report does not show the person’s ability to perform a job and could cause a person who is well qualified for the job not to be hired. Checking a person’s credit also leads to stereotyping a person, potential employers automatically assume that if a person has bad credit that they are not a responsible person or they will embezzle money from a company and that is not true at all. With the high gas prices, and the cost of everything else going up, and people being laid off, and no work, then of course their credit is going to suffer, but that don’t make them bad people. If a person cannot get a job because of bad credit then how are they supposed to pay their bills? Credit reports often are not up to date or contain inaccurate information, or maybe a person was a victim of identity theft. In my opinion I think it should be made illegal for a potential employer to check an applicant’s credit report.
