Keep Stillwater High School's Original Four-Hour Block Schedule

The Issue

Due to recent budget cuts, the Stillwater Board of Education is changing the way Stillwater High School's block schedule is working. Instead of 90-minute, four-hour days, we would be changed to a seven-hour/four-hour A/B schedule. This is a horrible idea for both the students and the teachers/administrators at SHS. We wish for the Stillwater BoE and the District Superintendent Dr. Ann Caine to keep our current schedule.

By signing this petition we can show Ann Caine and the BoE that we, as their constituents, do not agree with the new budget and schedule change that would severely cut back and lay off teachers and staff, add more students to an already overflowing high school, and change up the way Stillwater Public Schools works using underhanded tactics to propel this change through.

The new budget will be voted in on March 24th, 2014.

We only have a short time to #KeepTheBlock!

Hi, everyone, I would like to share information with you so that you have the correct information. First of all, the HS is the smallest it has been in decades, with a current enrollment of 962 students. This number includes the 180 students who attend concurrent and Meridian. So, for half of the day the HS is smaller than the MS and the JH. At one time the HS hosted 9th graders and the school has a capacity of 1300-1350 students. As far as the modified block schedule, this is in response to the budget cuts we are having to make due to reduced state funding. The traditional block requires more teachers than other schedules. It is a luxury we can no longer afford. We hope to place the 6 teachers at other sites within our district. We are successful at the HS not because of block but because of amazing teachers and students. The modified block is a compromise because we know there are some classes that really benefit from 90 minutes. The school board will be voting on the modified block on March 24, 6:30pm, and the meeting will be held at the high school. I hope this answers your questions. If not, please email me and I'll be happy to answer them. Dr. Caine
