National Park Service plans to trap and remove managed colony
June 11, 2014
The National Park Service (NPS) has given the caretakers of a feral colony in Plum Beach, Brooklyn until June 20 to trap and remove all the cats in residence.
The removal has been ordered despite the fact that no public nuisance exists. The 25 ferals, who have been there for many years, are all spayed, neutered and vaccinated against rabies. Their feeding area is clean and well-maintained.
Removal of these cats to the city shelter would put their lives in imminent danger. There are eight friendly cats also living in the Plum Beach colony; these cats were abandoned at various times and they have also been spayed, neutered and rabies-vaccinated. The caretakers are willing to find homes for these cats but need more than the one week now allotted to accomplish this difficult task.
