How We Won

Nov 24, 2010

After a number of organizations, and hundreds of Change.org members, filed petitions to California Senators Feinstein and Boxer demanding a deeper investigation into Li's case, on November 20 Senator Feinstein introduced a private bill delaying Li's deportation process and allowing for him to return home.  Although this is just a temporary fix, it demonstrates how legislation like the DREAM Act would be a step forward in immigration reform. Read the full story here.

Steve, a 20 year old City College of San Francisco student, is ethnically Chinese but was born in Peru, and was brought to the United States when he was only 12 years old. He is an honors student, a campus leader, and actively involved in his church. He is currently working towards a degree for a career in nursing.

In September, Steve and his family were arrested in an immigration raid at their home in San Francisco. It was not until then that Steve learned he had been ordered for deportation when he was 15 years old when his parents’ appeal for asylum was denied.

Steve is now being detained in Arizona and could be deported at any moment to Peru, where he has no family or friends. Steve would be homeless upon arrival. Steve is a San Franciscan. He attended Francisco Middle School, graduated from Washington High School, and was working hard to support his family and to contribute to this community.

Our staff recently met with Steve’s mother and we are also working with his attorneys at the Asian Law Caucus.

Together we are asking for your help to help bring Steve home. Please send a letter to California Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer urging them to grant Steve a “deferred action.”

Please grant Steve Li a deferred action

Greetings Senators Boxer and Feinstein,

Currently, a 20-year-old nursing student of the City College of San Francisco is detained, with the threat of deportation to Peru. He has not committed a crime, and has in fact been an upstanding student and member of his community. Having been brought to the United States when he was aged twelve, he was not aware of his immigration status until his San Francisco home was raided on September 15, 2010. With no family, associates, or home in Peru, Mr. Li's deportation would result in homelessness and alienation.

I respectfully request that you grant Mr. Li a deferred action, and allow him the opportunity to continue his pursuits as a valuable member of our society.
