The UCP Wheels for Humanity is a volunteer-based organization based out of the United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties affiliate that collects used and damaged wheelchairs and other mobility equipment. The equipment is refurbished and given to individuals with disabilities in need living in developing countries. Each device is customized to suit the needs of the individual.
The UCP Wheels for Humanity program began in 1995 in the North Hollywood basement of a disability advocate. Today, with partnerships with local and international agencies, the organization has grown to over 400 staff and thousands of volunteers. It boasts an average collection of about 4,000 wheelchairs a year with 100% of revenue earned through fundraising. To date, equipment has been distributed to over 34,000 people in more than 66 countries. Additionally, UCP Wheels for Humanity delivered and fitted 205 wheelchairs to adults and children in the West Bank, Israel in 2007.
In 2007, UCP Wheels for Humanity visited 15 Countries and distributed:
