Does a Wal-Mart on a Historic Battlefield Seem Right to You?

Does a Wal-Mart on a Historic Battlefield Seem Right to You?

The Issue

Your action TODAY can help preserve one of America's most hallowed landscapes. Please read on to learn how you can help!

The Civil War. Those three words evoke images of conflict, battle, hardship, and freedom; they symbolize our struggle to become one nation united. In Virginia's Orange County, one of the most difficult battles of the war--the May 5-6, 1864, Battle of the Wilderness--began six weeks of fighting that produced the bloodiest campaign in American history. Today, this battle and the Americans who died in it are commemorated at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.

However, this memorial is threatened. Wal-Mart and JDC Ventures LLC of Vienna, Virginia, have proposed to commercially develop 240,000 square feet on critically important land at the historic Wilderness Battlefield and just across the road from the National Park Service's center for interpreting the Battle of the Wilderness. This project would irrevocably harm the battlefield, undermine the visitor's experience of the National Military Park, and open the door for more incompatible, large-scale development at the national park's gateway.

Consequently, NPCA and its allies have asked Wal-Mart to relocate the planned Supercenter to another site in Orange County away from the battlefield and national park. We do not oppose growth in Orange County, but think it should be done in a sustainable manner. It is in Wal-Mart's power to change their plans and relocate their Supercenter. And, that's where YOU come in.

TAKE ACTION TODAY: The Orange County Board of Supervisors will conduct a hearing to approve a special use permit for the Wal-Mart project on Monday, July 27. Write to Wal-Mart's President and CEO TODAY and ask him to help save Wilderness Battlefield and our nation's Civil War heritage by choosing a less historically-significant site for the proposed Orange County, Virginia Supercenter. Your action on this issue helps ensure that generations to come will have the opportunity to experience a Wilderness Battlefield that looks and feels much like it did in 1864.

On behalf of NPCA, I thank you for helping protect our national parks for present and future generations!

Sincerely,
