A crucial proposal is coming up for a vote at KSSG….
"What is the proposal?" A 8 person interim committee to be appointed to work with the administration over the summer
"Why should I care?" Many of us have things we’d like to change about HKS, whether it’s academics, professional development, technology or operations. Currently there is no formal channel through which our voices can be heard by the administration—because most major strategic decisions for all programs are made over the summer. As a result, the student body is not formally consulted, and therefore, not heard.
"Why is this important right now?" Every summer, the HKS administration plans, reviews, reforms and updates the various aspects of HKS academic, community and student life. As of this moment, there is no formal avenue for student participation in this process. Yet, the ability to engage the administration is big.
We need summer representation. We want student voices to be heard.
"What can I do about this?" Lend your voice to our petition. Follow the link below to sign our petition to strengthen the interim summer committee. Your voice is crucial in ensuring adequate summer representation. If enough people sign on, we shall be able to get our voices heard when the administration is making the most important decisions about the student experience.
Specifically, we propose that:
1. The KSSG interim committee be appointed by election or application for Summer 2011.
a. Appointment will be by election or application, and any interested student may run or apply*.
*If interest exceeds capacity, KSSG will select members based on availability for
serious engagement, and maintaining a balance of interests (academics,
professional development, etc)
2. The interim committee will review the student survey and solicit more information from students, if needed.
3. Students be given a voice in the Administration’s summer planning: at least 1 interim committee members shall sit on each Admin committee
4. The interim committee shall draft a proposal for changing the KSSG election cycle, so that in the future there will be student leadership over the summer. The proposal will be voted on in the fall. The proposal must include:
a. A provision for leadership elections in the Spring semester
b. A provision to provide equal and fair opportunity for MC/MPA students to
participate in student government, via co-chairs, summer or January elections,
set-aside VP positions, etc.
