After repeated rejection from the AKC. to register the American Pit Bull Terrier as the pure breed it had become, the UKC. was founded for this sole purpose in 1898.  The breed went on to become a decorated ww1 hero.  It also was excelling in many competitions in everything from agility to weight pulling.

Pete, the APBT. who stared in the classic tv. show (The little Rascals) did his part in showing the country how well the breed does with children. He also showed us how intelligent and trainable they are.

As the APBT. grew in popularity the AKC. decided to finaly except them in their club. They took five straight from the UKC. but changed their breed name to Staffordshire Terrier in 1936.      After a while it was evident that the name was to similar to England's Stafordshire Bull Terrier so they changed it again to American Staffordshire Terrier.

To this day if you first register the dog with the AKC. as an American Staffordshire Terrier,   you could also turn around and register it with the UKC. as the American Pit Bull Terrier it truly is.   However because of the word (pit)  If you first register with the UKC.  the AKC. wont have anything to do with it.

In 1993 an APBT. was named Ken-L-Ration's dog hero for saving the lives of 30 people, 29 other dogs, 13 horses and even a cat. In the great floods that hit California that year. The breed scores higher than most in American canine temperament tests. They are more affectionate and loving to their human family's than many breeds.   They are staunch defenders of children.   The breed is used in police work, search and rescue work, as service dogs and therapy dogs. The positive traits of the APBT. goes on and on.   Yet just because the darker side of society has and does use them for dog fighting and in other negative ways, they have become the most persecuted and discriminated breed in the world today.

This pledge is to do some research either on line, borrowing a book from the library or any way you choose. To learn more about and become a better advocate for one of the most fantastic breeds of dog there is.                      The American Pitbull Terrier.

Also, Please check out the non profit called Bad Rap.  You can access them from my profile. I have a fundraiser for them there.   If you can help great, but please at least become a supporter.
