Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, US Operations:
We ask for your help in reversing a horrible choice made by USDA with regards to Boo(Queenie) a female, Asian, elephant currently in Leggett, Texas, and expected to arrive in San Antonio as a result of a settlement agreement between Davenport, her owner, and the USDA.
Reverse the Settlement Order for Queenie Being Moved to San Antonio Zoo, Texas
We contend:
Less than half an acre, living on a packed and barren dirt floor is hardly a home, especially to one of the world's largest land mammals, and was already cause enough to escalate claims that Lucky, 50-year-old Asian elephant, needed to be retired to a sanctuary, having spent 48 of her years on its compact surface, over two of which have been alone since the death of her companion, Alport in November 2007. Now Queenie is on her way, and given the aggressive tendencies both elephants have been known to exhibit, introductions into the tiny and cramped elephant display leave little room for imagination. (Which may very well result in isolation.) Not only is it a poor and dangerous match, but the San Antonio Zoo has claimed they don't intend on keeping Asian elephants as part of their master plan for Africa Live, and will ship any off once the African exhibit is completed. Queenie's transfer to the San Antonio Zoo is in no way logical, aside from haphazardly filling the two year void marked by Lucky's solidarity on the San Antonio Zoo's part.
We respectfully ask that this choice be overturned and that Queenie be sent, instead, to Sanctuary, as her owner preferred. That his wishes and those of the people and citizens of the United States be honored and respected and the many voices speaking out on behalf of both elephants across the globe.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
