Michael Ashley Stein and Janet E. Lord | July 9, 2009 Editor: John Feffer The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, or the Convention) is the first human rights treaty of the 21st century. Okello Just in
Bryan Lupton | PostedJuly 9th, 2009 | Africa I went to a training on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the Alero IDP camp and met several extraordinary individuals. One of these is Justin Okello. A survivor of polio at age 3, Justin lost the use of his left leg and uses crutches to get around. In addition, his family was torn apart by the war with the LRA, with two of his siblings killed, five abducted, and two of those five having yet to return. No one knows if they are still alive. Interpreter creates children's books in ASL, English text
New children's books come out everyday, but it's rare that someone creates an entirely new way of storytelling. But the creator of a new version of The Princess and the Pea has come up with a book for the hearing–impaired that's written in both English and American Sign Language. Creator Laurie Meyer is a long time American Sign Language interpreter. When she couldn't find any books in ASL, she decided to create her own –– if you can call it a book. It's really something new. The text of the book is in English, and it comes with a companion DVD. What you see on the DVD are rich, colorful illustrations and an expressive ASL sign
