"Dig for Texas" (www.DigForTexas.com) hopes to inspire statewide appreciation and support of home and community fruit and vegetable gardens. We are a non-partisan group, and we believe that whomever is elected as governor in 2010 can help spark more interest in fresh, local food by showcasing the history of the Texas Governor's Mansion garden (which is temporarily inaccessible due to renovations) and visiting community gardens regularly during his term.
In a manner similar to the successful, high-profile 2008 Eat The View campaign that helped spark the replanting of the White House garden, we will submit all signatures of support collected here to whomever is elected governor on November 2, 2010. Ultimately, we envision the Office of the Governor working collaboratively with Texas Agri-Life Extension, Friends of the Texas Governor's Mansion, and other relevant entities to create K-12 curriculum materials and a high-profile multi-media campaign centered on home and community gardens.
Dig for Texas
To: All Major Candidates in the 2010 Governor's Race
We ask that the Office of the Governor, beginning in 2011, work to foster appreciation for homegrown fruits and vegetables by showcasing the history of the Texas Governor's Mansion kitchen garden and visiting community gardens statewide periodically. We ask that the Governor and his staff rely upon social and traditional media as well as K-12 curricula to encourage new public and home food gardens. We request that the Governor personally make a regular and concerted effort to link local food with general wellness in the public sphere. Essentially, we believe local and homegrown products are vital for food security and food safety. Moreover, we believe that fresh foods are essential for combating health woes like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. For these important reasons--as well as global economic and environmental challenges, we seek the support of all major gubernatorial candidates on this initiative during the 2010 campaign.
