Remove Straitgate Farm in Ottery St Mary as a Preferred Quarry Site

Remove Straitgate Farm in Ottery St Mary as a Preferred Quarry Site
The Issue
It would be an environmental and economic disaster for the town.
The DCC site appraisal is fundamentally flawed having excluded sites with less merit. It would destroy an historic farm site with a Grade 11 listed Devon Longhouse dating back to the 1580's, farmed for over 1000 years and mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The loss of 150 acres of grade 2 arable farm land, dairy herd and local Hunter and Pony Club events.
The Environment Agency is concerned that there could be an increased risk of flooding to properties in Ottery. A large amount of ancient woodland could be lost fed by streams from the farm and natural spring water supplies to around 100 people could disappear.
There is no need for another quarry as there is sufficient resource for the next 50 years in sites being worked elsewhere in Devon and the demand continues to fall.
The town council of Ottery St Mary, Aylesbeare Parish council and Member of Parliament Hugo Swire have all made representations to Devon County Council expressing their concerns.
A Quarry would create 3000 HGV lorry movements a month for at least 10 years with resulting noise, pollution, dust, damage to local roads and a huge increase in Carbon emissions.
Ruin an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as the site sits in a dominant elevated position which can be seen from a large section of the historic town of Ottery St Mary and for miles around.
