Designation of a Pre-Health Advisor at the University of Akron
Designation of a Pre-Health Advisor at the University of Akron
The Issue
As recognized by pre-health students (pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, pre-advanced nursing, pre-optometry, pre-veterinary, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician's assisting), the University of Akron does not have a designated pre-health advisor or group of advisors as most other major and non-major universities do, that can assist students, who are seeking professional and knowledgable advice about their future health related endeavors. The decisions students make from the day they enter their undergraduate degree pursuance to the day they graduate, affect their chances of getting into post-baccalaureate programs and without the proper guidance when it comes to choosing academic pathways specific to the individual, deciding whether or not to drop a class in times of pressure, knowing what kind of extra curriculars to take part in, deciding when to take the entrance exams and how to prepare for them, etc., students are less-likely to make it in meeting their goals due to even small mistakes made in preparation to meet those goals.
After communication with the College of Arts & Sciences, the goal of obtaining and designating a pre-health advisor was unable to be met due to thoughts from administration and associates to the administrators in this college, that there is no problem, that we in fact DO have a pre-health advisor, when in reality we DO NOT, and if we do, pre-health students are unaware of who it is. There is no clear designation of a pre-health advisor on campus and most pre-health students feel at a loss when it comes to professional advice and helpful advising for their future plans in the competitive field of medicine.
Students at the University of Akron seeking to go on to a health professional school of some sort deserve to have the same competetive undergraduate experience that most other pre-health undergraduates receive and as it stands now, they are lacking in having that high quality assistance. The University of Akron is one of the only out of the major Ohio Universities (Kent State University, Bowling Green State University, University of Cincinnati, Miami University, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, The University of Toledo, Wright State University, and Case Western University) that does not have a designated pre-health advisor or office of pre-health advisors. Although it may be saving the university a few dollars by not having a pre-health advisor on campus, it is doing our pre-health students a grave injustice.
