Grant us our Voting Rights

The Issue

Taoiseach agus Tanáiste,

We are a group of Irish citizens living abroad who have established the campaign ‘Our Right'

Emigration is a forced reality for tens of thousands of Irish people. There is no work at home and until the economy in Ireland turns around we have no option but to take what work we can get abroad. Despite this reality we still want to have a say in our country’s future.

We believe the Government’s decision to exclude the Irish emigrant community from the Constitutional Convention is a mistake. It is a mistake they could easily rectify.

Article 2 of the Constitution asserts the right of Irish citizens - be they at home or abroad – to play an active role in their country.

“It is the entitlement and birth right of every person born in the island of Ireland, which includes its islands and seas, to be part of the Irish Nation. That is also the entitlement of all persons otherwise qualified in accordance with law to be citizens of Ireland. Furthermore, the Irish nation cherishes its special affinity with people of Irish ancestry living abroad who share its cultural identity and heritage.”

We are Irish
We demand our voice be heard
We demand the right to vote in the next presidential election and all constitutional reform referendums.
We demand voting rights be extended to citizens in the six counties
