Demand Kenya's National Commission on Human Rights Condemn Violence Toward Gays
The Issue
The Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Odinga, spoke at a rally in November 2010, and ordered that all gay people in the country be arrested and locked up.
"If found the homosexuals should be arrested and taken to relevant authorities," Mr Odinga said. Odinga also added that a recent census showed there are moer women than men in Kenya, so there's no need for people to engage in same-sex relationships.
Talk about stunningly ignorant for a world leader.
In many respects, Kenya shows a lot of promise when it comes to human rights, with one of the most well resourced National Human Rights Commissions in the world. It's time to call on that Commission to condemn Prime Minister Odinga's comments, which are dangerous and only serve to foster violence and harasmment toward Kenya's LGBT population.
