Demand Pastor Sean Harris Step Down

Demand Pastor Sean Harris Step Down

The Issue

Recently, Pastor Sean Harris has gotten himself involved in a media firestorm surrounding a sermon he gave where he advocated child abuse for children who appeared to be LGBT. Child abuse is never okay, and religion does not make it acceptable to advocate for the phsycial and mental harm of any child, regardless of their actual or percieved sexuality.

Pastor Harris has said such completely unacceptable statements as "If your four year old son starts acting a little girlish [...] squash it. Tell him 'Go outside and dig a ditch because that's what boys do.'" and "Dads, the instant you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you go over there and crack that wrist.Man up! Give him a good punch." He has this to say about little girls: "When your daughter starts acting a little too butch, reign her in. And you say 'Oh, no. Oh no, sweetheart. You can play sports [...] to the glory of God. But sometimes you are going to walk like a girl and talk like a girl and smell like a girl! And that means you're going to be beautiful! You're going to be attractive, and you're going to dress yourself up!"

What kinds of messages is this sending to the community of Fayetteville? This man has a position of power, and he also is over both a preschool and a K-12 school. The physical, emotional, and psychology needs of children must come before the discomfort of one man. We must demand that he step down from his position of power, because he has used it to advocate for things that are wrong when the common people do it, and are especially wrong when someone in a position of power does nothing to stop it.
