MarieClaire's website published a post by "A Year of Living Flirtatiously" blogger Maura Kelly entitled, "Should 'Fatties' Get a Room? (Even on TV?)" The original post called fat people gross and the author compared implied obesity with heroin addiction and drunkenness.

Kelly apologized in her post, but it's not enough. Demand that Marie Claire magazine issue an official apology for allowing a fataphobic and blatantly sizeist blog post to represent their publication.

MarieClaire.com Post, 'Should 'Fatties' Get a Room? (Even on TV?)'

Greetings,

After reading the latest "A Year of Living Flirtatiously" post by Maura Kelly, entitled "Should 'Fatties' Get a Room? (Even on TV?)," I am very disappointed in the content of the post, the fat-phobic attitude that propelled Kelly's opinions and the blatant dismissal of Marie Claire's management to the thousands of people who were offended by the post. (When this petition was written, the post had over 2,000 comments.)

In case you weren't aware of some of the more offensive aspects of Kelly's post, comments like "No one who is as fat as Mike and Molly can be healthy;" "I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything;" and "I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair," promote the type of fat-shaming that drives women like Kelly, an admitted former anorexic, to seek extreme measures in the pursuit of thinness.

Promoting health and promoting thinness are two different things. Kelly's backhanded apology proves that she and the executive team at Marie Claire are not aware of the difference. You cannot ascertain the health of a person by looking at them and the fact that the characters on "Mike & Molly" are at Overeaters Anonymous proves that the show doesn't "promote obesity."

Marie Claire, as I understand it, is a company for women. Fat shaming and the promotion of thinness as an ideal do not serve the interests of women. Please make a public apology for this post. Please also be aware of anti-fat statements on your website and attempt to avoid them in the future.
