You know you've arrived in Humboldt County when you wind through beautiful and majestic Richardson Grove State Park. CalTrans has a plan to widen Highway 101 through this state park to accomodate large commercial trucks. Join the growing community campaign to Save Richardson Grove.
Three years after Caltrans began planning to widen Highway 101 through Richardson Grove State Park for giant trucks to deliver goods in and out of Humboldt County, the Environmental Protection Information Center, the Center for Biological Diversity, Californians for Alternatives for Toxins, and several local residents filed a legal complaint in San Francisco Superior Court, challenging the plan. In addition to a legal strategy to protect the famed old growth redwoods, EPIC and a coalition of community activists have organized a public campaign to underscore the growing movement forming to protect this stand of ancient trees.
The following is from Joe R. McBride, consulting professional forester, California License No. 1306, and a Professor of Forestry and Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, who made this declaration based on his personal knowledge, expertise, and experience:
"The redwood forest in Richardson Grove State Park supports old growth stands of redwood that are an important part of California's natural heritage. This heritage has nearly disappeared as a result of logging and conversion to agriculture of the original redwood forest. Of the close to 2,000,000 acres of redwood forest in California in 1850, only about 39,000 acres are protected in state and national parks. These old growth stands cannot be replaced and special consideration should be given to any projects that would impact the remaining old growth forests.
The highway widening is unecessary and unsafe. Thousdands of people oppose it, including local truckers in the area. Please help us protect ancient redwoods, and stop this misguided CalTrans project by signing this petition now.
Defend Ancient Redwoods, Save Richardson Grove State Park!
Greetings Gov. Jerry Brown, Sen. Noreen Evans, and Hon. Wes Chesbro:
I support EPIC’s campaign to stop CalTrans from widening Highway 101 through Richardson Grove State Park. Richardson Grove is a beloved gateway to the Redwood region, and must not be sacrificed.
The State Park was established to protect an irreplaceable ancient grove of Redwood trees, and today attracts thousands of tourists to Humboldt County every year.
By eliminating this wasteful and harmful project you will be saving the State money and saving the ancient old-growth redwood trees threatened by the highway widening.
Please do not sacrifice Richardson Grove! Protect the irreplaceable old-growth redwood trees and preserve our state park. I ask that you do all in your official powers to stop this project from proceeding as soon as possible, before it is too late.
Thank you,
