If the demolition is allowed to continue, against the ruling of the Landmarks commission, it sets a precedent of allowing "mistakes" to happen without consequence-  ending any power for preservation.
There is no excuse for not rebuilding the "mistake"- Berlin rebuilt after WWII because they value their history.
