Include Gary Johnson in the debate - Oct. 2011

The Issue

Sign this petition to stop the injustice being committed against Gary Johnson and to let our voice and our representative, Gary Johnson, be heard at the debate on October 11th at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire!

Gary Johnson is being excluded from the upcoming debate at Dartmouth College. This is not the first time this has happened. He has only been invited to one debate since June. So:

Why is Gary Johnson being Excluded from the debates?

Is it because he has garnered less than 2% in the national polls?

  • NO! Governor Johnson is excluded from most national polls. The ones that DO include him vary between 1-4% support. Let's suppose that if he is included in 25% of the national polls, and garners over 2% only twice, then it would stand to reason that if he were included in the polls 100% of the time, he'd score over the 2% threshold maybe 8 times, which is more than enough to qualify for this debate.

Is it because the debate is on a topic that Gary Johnson doesn't have a strong stance on?

  • NO! Governor Johnson's resume is the most compelling of all of the candidates on the focus topic of this debate: jobs and the economy. Under his policies, a greater percentage increase in jobs was seen in New Mexico than in any other state, and more than at any other period in New Mexico history. Governor Johnson also vetoed nearly every proposed increase in spending passed by both houses of congress, leaving his state with a surplus and cutting spending growth in half.

Is it because he is unknown at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where the debate is being held?

  • NO! Governor Johnson has on several occasions given speeches in classes and auditoriums on Dartmouth College campus, where the debate is being held, and has been a permanent fixture in New Hampshire since the campaign season started. His support in New Hampshire is steadily growing, and is well over 2% by any objective measure. A large portion of people who come to know his candidacy end up supporting it.

Is it because, when he has been included in debates, he didn't do well?

  • NO! Governor Johnson became a media frenzy for 24 hours following his appearance in the last debate, causing a substantial amount of press coverage, web traffic, and social network buzz for the debate sponsors and organizers.

So what conclusion can we come to?

  • Gary's problem is in name recognition, not in acceptance. In the state where people know him best (NM), he enjoys a positive favorability, which no other candidate can claim. In NH, where he's spent more of his time, his support is also trending up significantly. Exclusion from the polls and the debates is the only major impediment to his ability to cross these polling thresholds, whereas people like Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich enjoy nearly unanimous recognition, but only a small fraction of the people who know them actually like or support them.

So what can you do about it?

  • You can help get the word out and show the media that we've had enough! It's time to stop letting the media exclude people who would otherwise qualify for these debates!
