WHEREAS, the University of California Regents are not representative of the UC student, worker and faculty population, and therefore do not best serve the needs of the campus community. This lack of connection between Regents and the campus creates a system with limited accountability so our voices are not valued in UC governance proportionate to the degree decisions at the Regent level directly affect our lives. Such a system allows Regents to comfortably rule for personal, distant interests rather than for the academic and occupational improvement of the population of California. THEREFORE, I the undersigned, petition the California State Legislature to create a UC Regent system that upholds academic freedom and democracy.
