Reject Republican attempts to avoid Defense cuts at our expense.
Reject Republican attempts to avoid Defense cuts at our expense.
The Issue
In August of 2011, in exchange for agreeing to a raise of the U.S. debt ceiling, Congress agreed to form a budgetary Super Committee that was to agree by November on a budgetary plan to reduce the debt by approximately $1.2 trillion. Failing an agreement by the Super Committee, spending cuts were to automatically trigger that would be equally unpaletable to both parties.
Republicans faced steep cuts to the Defense budget and Democrats faced equally steep cuts to social spending programs.
The Super Committee failed. Now Republicans are trying to shift their unpalatable cuts onto the backs of every-day Americans by proposing additional cuts to social spending and regulation. A House measure would target Medicare, Meals on Wheels for the elderly, and strip funds from regulatory agencies that protect us from "too big to fail" banks.
If they want to avoid Defense cuts, demand they raise tax rates on corporations and the top 1% of the population. Stand up for the middle class and demand that the Republicans face the consequences of their decisions instead of shifting them onto us.
