Ban toxic lawn and tree spray in neighborhoods.

The Issue

Dr. Herbert Needleman, member of the Committee on Environmental Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics and NAS, at a senate hearing, said, "I will tell you without fear of contradiction that exposing children to excessive levels of pesticides is impairing their health, eroding their mental abilities and shortening their lives."

1. 10,400 people in the U.S.die each year from cancer related to pesticides--estimated cost per year $38 billion dollars.
2. Pesticides have negative effects on young children's hand-eye coordination, balance, short-term memory, simple problem solving, and ability to draw a human figure. Our country depends on healthy, young minds that will be able to grow and become our future leaders, scientists, and healthy citizens.
3. There is no way to protect your family from neighbors' pesticide drift. Yet, lawnspray is being applied, at a rate of 10 times more per acre than what a farmer uses per acre, on his field.
4. Children living in homes where pesticides are sprayed on lawns and gardens have a 6.5 greater risk of developing leukemia. (1987 National Cancer Institute.)
5. Most states have pre-empted the right of communities to regulate pesticides and herbicides used in their own respective localities.
6. The human right of an individual to breathe clean air is being denied by these daily sprays (as many as 31 homes a day in my neighborhood) that consist of over 31 assorted chemicals; the synergistic effect of which is an unknown.
7. Many lawn and tree sprays are performed as a "preventative" and not due to any actual infestation.
8. Toxic lawn and tree spray is one of most overlooked, worldwide causes of Non-Communicable Diseases. One such disease is Environmental Illness (E.I.). E.I. is more prevalent than diabetes in the U.S. today.
