Reduce the Speed Limit on Fontainebleau Drive from 35 mph to 25 mph
Reduce the Speed Limit on Fontainebleau Drive from 35 mph to 25 mph
The Issue
The City of New Orleans' Traffic Division has been dragging its feet since August of 2011 to do a 'Final Speed Study' on Fontainebleau Drive.
This is a residential area with an elementary school. During all hours, especially during school hours when the speed limit is 20 mph, most vehicles travel at over 40 mph through the school zone. The posted speed limit is 35 mph; however Jefferson, Broadway, and Versailles avenues all have neutral grounds, are approximately the same width as Fontainebleau, and are residential neighborhoods just like Fontainebleau's. However, they all have a speed limit of 25 mph.
There have been several accidents on Fontainebleau Drive and I have witnessed an unprecedented amount of traffic speeding through the neighborhood while children are being dropped off or walking to and from St. Rita's School.
I have been in contact with our previous and current District A City Council Member's Office on a monthly basis to requesting that our neighborhood be considered for a reduction in speed limit - to no avail. District A's City Council's Office does copy me on the email stream to the Chief Traffic Engineer. The Chief stated in an email dated 19-September, 2011 at 1:56pm, "We have some of the necessary data for this request, but will be making two more visits for data collection at various times during the day shortly. Once all data is collected, we will get our recommendation to you." In January another neighbor emailed our District A City Council's Office. In that email the Chief Traffic Engineer's response was, "Still waiting on the final speed study. I'm having trouble scheduling it with everything else on my plate." It is now March of 2012 and we are still waiting for the final recommendation.
Please help me make the safety of our children a top priority by signing this petition.
