There have been recent changes in Florida law and state backed Citizens Property Insurance has stopped writing new sinkhole policies for Florida residents. I am a Realtor and had my own policy request denied despite having no evidence of a sinkhole and having had prior coverage with Citizens. I also am aware of several other would-be homeowners who's mortgage lenders require them to have sinkhole policies but could not obtain them through Citizens and now are unable to achieve their goal of home ownership. This change by Citizens is going to worsen an already extremely challenging Florida real estate market and something needs to be done about it. Citizens has already raised its rates significantly but apparently not enough to write any new policies.
