The public-funded Haverford Township Free Library is promoting Ringling Bros. Circus on its home page - http://www.haverfordlibrary.org/
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has a long and well-documented history of abusing animals. No one should be promoting them until they stop using animals!
Stop Promoting the Animal-Abusing Ringling Bros. Circus!
Greetings,
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Haverford Township Free Library.
----------------
Stop Promoting the Animal-Abusing Ringling Bros. Circus!
Ringling Bros.’ history of animal abuse is long and well-documented. In November 2011, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) imposed a record fine of $270,000 against Ringling Bros. for its repeated failure to meet even the minimal standards of the Animal Welfare Act. Just last fall, a sick elephant named Sarah fell down and collapsed while attempting to climb up the ramp of the train car after performances in Anaheim, Texas. USDA inspectors had previously cited Ringling Bros. in Colorado Springs for not properly treating Sarah, the same 54-year-old Asian elephant who is suffering from a chronic condition with pus-like discharge in her urine. Sarah is just one of hundreds of animals suffering in the circus.
In October 2011, Mother Jones published an in-depth article about Ringling Bros. circus treatment of animals after a year-long investigation, revealing Ringling Bros.’s standard practices of beatings, bullhooks, and three-day train rides without breaks. Many Ringling Bros. elephants are afflicted with the human strain of tuberculosis.
I sincerely hope the library will reconsider its association with Ringling Bros. circus. For the sake of the animals and the safety of the public, please implement a formal policy against the use of animal acts as promotions, and schedule only cruelty-free events.
