The Chilean Congress approved in May 2011 the UPOV 91, an international agreement to which it had pledged to adhere with the firm at the beginning of the last decade of an FTA with the U.S.. None of these agreements was consulted to the citizens, being that they directly affect the lives of all people.

This international agreement (UPOV 91) requires a new law amending the current legislation in Chile to allow apply its terms. This law is called the "Monsanto Law" because the company represents the small group of companies that would benefit from this law at the expense of:

a) the health of all Chileans (who would become a sort of lab rats), since there is no impartial evidence that ensure the safety of GM seeds for human health. This law would pave the way for entry and the spread of these seeds in the country.

b) the work of indigenous farmers and traditional and / or organic farmers, since in many cases would be forced to pay to use seeds that already have and have long used, plus the possibility that their crops can be contaminated by patented seeds (probably GM) belonging to these companies (one of the modes of operation of Monsanto is: buy adjacent land, contaminate traditional crops of neighbors and then charge for use). This law seeks to protect the proprietary of plant products, which does not necessarily mean that it will grant patents to the original developers of the product, such as indigenous people by example.

c) the national crop biodiversity, thus affecting all the surrounding ecosystems.

Help us to stop and / or reverse these laws. The current government is pressuring the congress for approval. In addition, the official spokesperson of the government  (that now is a designated senator, not elected by the people) is one of the owners, along with his father, of one of the firms that would benefit from this law, which represents a case of conflict of interest.

El Parlamento chileno aprobó en mayo de 2011 el acuerdo UPOV 91, un acuerdo internacional al cual se habían comprometido a adherir al firmar a principios de la década pasada un Tratado de Libre Comercio con los EE.UU.. Ninguno de estos acuerdos fue consultado a los ciudadanos, siendo que afectan directamente la vida de toda la población.

Este acuerdo internacional (UPOV 91) requiere una nueva ley que modifique la legislación actual de Chile para permitir aplicar sus términos. Esta ley es llamada la “ley Monsanto" porque esta empresa representa al pequeño grupo de empresas que se beneficiarían de esta ley a costa de:

a) la salud de todos los chilenos (que se convertirían en una especie de ratas de laboratorio), ya que no hay pruebas imparciales que permitan asegurar la inocuidad de las semillas transgénicas para la salud humana. Esta ley pavimentaría el camino para el ingreso y la masificación de estas semillas en el país.

b) el trabajo de agricultores indígenas y de pequeños y medianos agricultores tradicionales y/u orgánicos, ya que en muchos casos se verían obligados a pagar por utilizar semillas que ya poseen y que han usado desde hace tiempo, además de la posibilidad de que sus cultivos sean contaminados por las semillas patentadas (probablamente transgénicas) que pertenecen a estas empresas (uno de los modos de operar de Monsanto es: comprar terrenos aledaños, luego contaminar los cultivos tradicionales vecinos con sus semillas para despues cobrar por su uso). Esta ley busca proteger los productos vegetales patentados, lo que no necesariamente quiere decir que se vayan a otorgar las patentes a los desarrolladores originales del producto, como pueden ser los indígenas por ejemplo.

c) la biodiversidad de los cultivos nacionales, afectando por consiguiente a todos los ecosistemas circundantes.

Ayúdanos a frenar y/o revertir estas leyes. El gobierno actual esta presionando al congreso para que se apruebe. Ademas, la vocera oficial del gobierno (que ahora es una senadora designada, no elegida por la gente) es una de las dueñas, junto con su padre, de una de las empresas que se verían beneficiadas por esta ley, lo que representa un claro caso de conflicto de intereses.
