Child Care Centers Closing

The Issue

Child Care Centers in Cuyahoga County are suffering because of the inadequate rates reimbursed by the State of Ohio.  The current rates are causing child care centers to either discontinue service to school age children, discontinue service to children receiving subsidies or close their doors because of inadequate funding.  If funding was returned to levels of the 2008-2009 fiscal year, these centers could hang on until the end of the biennium.  Where are all of these low income children going if the neighborhood centers are closing?  How can the state deny low income children quality childcare by forcing centers to close? How can our elected officials put small businesses out of business and cause people to loose jobs in this economy?  How can Ohio cut more funding to essential Early Childhood Programs than any other state in the union?
