Place a Moratorium on School Turnarounds, Consolidations and closings.

The Issue

Since 2004, the Chicago Board of Education has closed over 60 neighborhood schools, expanded politically connected charters, well-funded mediocre turnarounds and imposed immense disruption on the lives of countless students and their families. The drastic experiment, known as Renaissance 2010, has led to spikes in violence in receiving schools and further destabilized already struggling communities. We ask for a moratorium of all such school actions unless and until a comprehensive independent study can assess the impact of such experiments upon the lives of the children they have been purported to improve.
