A mandatory minimum is a sentence that must be imposed for a particular crime, without consideration of mitigating circumstances. Changing Mandatory Minimums is important because the sentencing imposed on non-violent offenders don't fit their crimes.   

My son Steven was sentenced to a mandatory 16 years in prison for possession of 0.7 grams of crack cocaine, while within a 1000 ft of a school zone. (It was 9 pm and no children were present at the time) He was coming out of a gas station down the street from the school. He didn't have any prior felony convictions. Without the mandatory minimum, my son would have been on probation. I'm not trying to justify my son actions. We both know what he did was wrong but he need a punishment that fit his crime.

I have read countless stories like my sons. The law need to change. There has to be a better way to punish or rehabilitate non-violent offenders. People who commit murder get less time then drug offences.
