On January 24th, the emaciated bodies of three chained dogs were discovered, huddled together inside a doghouse. The pit bulls had been starved to death by their guardian Jimmy Lee Spears Jr. Three felony warrants were issued for Spears. This is the first case of Susie's Law to be tried in NC County. Prior to the enactment of Susie's Law, such acts of animal cruelty were considered misdemeanours. The Law, named after Susie (see petition picture), a dog who survived being tortured and burned, means that the case can be tried as a Class H Felony, which is punishable by jail time.

Spears will appear in court in March. Please ask the DA to prosecute Jimmy Lee Spears Jr. to the fullest extent of the law.

Case against Jimmy Lee Spears Jr.

Dear District Attorney Bradsher,

I am contacting you regarding the case against Jimmy Lee Spears Jr., who is currently facing three felony charges of animal cruelty for starving three dogs who were under his care. These animals were intentionally deprived of sustenance and must have inevitably suffered tormenting weakness, agonizing muscle spasms, and ultimately experienced a horrifying, slow death.

This was a deliberate act of cruelty, with disregard for the pain and suffering of these animals who relied on their caretaker. Mr Spears must be held accountable for his actions. Animal cruelty is a serious offence that should not be taken lightly. This case is further highlighted by the fact that Mr Spears is the first person in the county to be tried under Susie’s Law. A successful conviction will make the community aware that such abhorrent crimes will no longer pass by a simple slap on the wrist. Please set an example for others in the community and make a statement that such cruel behaviour and callous disregard for life will not be tolerated.

I respectfully ask that you prosecute Jimmy Lee Spears Jr. to the fullest extent of the law.
