Call for U.S. Leadership on Global Deforestation
Sign the petition and tell Congress to include forests in future climate policy
Sponsored by: The Rainforest Site
The U.S. Congress is expected to work on legislation to tackle climate change, helping the United States and other countries forge a new international agreement to succeed the carbon-capping Kyoto Protocol.
Let your voice be heard urging our leaders to establish a strategy to highlight the global impact of deforestation and push for the inclusion of forests in domestic climate policy.

Deforestation is a major cause of climate change - greenhouse gases emitted via forest clearing represent about 20% of the world's global warming pollution, or the equivalent of the total emissions produced by the United States or China, or more than the total emissions of every car, truck, plane, ship and train on earth. There is also evidence that regional conflicts and hunger are directly connected with deforestation and global warming.
Under a proposal presented by forest nations around the globe that would replace the Kyoto protocol, developing countries would be compensated for protecting their forests. If done properly, this concept could eventually trigger the flow of billions of dollars for forest conservation and poverty alleviation initiatives. Urge the U.S. Congress to establish a strategy to highlight the global impact of deforestation and to include forests in domestic climate policy.
