Call for the resignation of Sparkman High School's Principal, Michael Campbell due to his roll in the death of Christian Adamek

The Issue

To quote information attached to a video about this event:  “On the evening of Friday, September 27th, 2013, a fifteen year old Alabama boy named Christian Adamek ran naked across of a football field.  On Wednesday October 2nd, Christian hung himself.  His suicide followed a public statement made by Sparkman High School Principal Mike Campbell to WHNT News, the local Television Station, that the incident could bring Adamek major repercussions, like having to register as a sex offender.  Adamek’s sister indicated on Twitter that her brother was facing expulsion.

The publicizing of his troubles with the school and the legal system were orchestrated by Campbell before any legal hearings were scheduled and shortly after administrative actions by school officials.  Campbell was new to the school, having only started work there on July 1st.  However, he has been in secondary education over thirty years.  For whatever reason, WHNT News removed their coverage of this boy’s suicide.  The following is the original news cast which shows Campbell publicizing Adamek’s situation, and the WHNT article is included in this video’s description.  RIP Christian…” Link to video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClBFgfZjfQc

The calloused hard-line zero tolerance reaction to a harmless prank preformed by 15 year old Sparkman High School student Christian Adamek by Principal Mike Campbell directly resulted in the teens death.  Instead of an appropriate disciplinary reaction to a high school student's inappropriate behavior, Mike Campbell showed an extraordinary lack of empathy by not only moving for the student’s expulsion, as Tweeted by Christian’s sister, but recommending the incident be handled by the criminal court system.  The potential consequences of this type of nonsensical disciplinary action could include Christian Adamek being added to the sexual offender’s registry, effectively destroying the rest of this boy’s life.

It was more important for Principal Mike Campbell to terrify the student body in creating an example with the rest of Christian Adamek’s life than for him to be viewed as perhaps not completely in control of the students he serves.  If he were to be any gentler in handling this situation maybe another student may think of another victimless crime that could potentially make him look a little foolish.  Mike Campbell placed himself first over the life of a playfully-mischievous student and demonstrated that he would do anything to keep himself in control; even potentially sacrifice the livelihood of a child over an embarrassing action.

This profoundly selfish, almost bullying behavior led by Mike Campbell resulted in the death of a 15 year old boy; someone’s child.  To any parent, this could have happened to your child.  A school left in the hands of such a self-serving non-empathetic individual will have a future with other devastating yet otherwise preventable mistakes.  Mike Campbell is not fit to be the principal of any school.  Sparkman High School has experienced an unforgivable tragedy at the hands of its leader, Mike Campbell.  In proving his profound disconnect from the student body and his purely self-serving behavior he should resign.  This will protect future students of Sparkman High School from such iron-fisted tactics.  It will set an example to other large-ego leaders that the children of their schools come first, and it is the job of its leaders to try and understand the best way to serve and guide them into their futures.

Enter your reMIKE CAMPBELL’S STATEMENT During the past two weeks an overwhelming amount of misinformation has circulated both nationally and internationally concerning the passing of one of our students. It is unfortunate that much ridicule has been based on inaccurate and unsubstantiated information. The school district is required to maintain confidentiality regarding student information and we have respected the family’s right to privacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Adamek and his family and we will assist him any way we can. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the support of the Sparkman community, Dr. Copeland and his staff and the Board of Education during this trying time. You are what make Sparkman High School a great school and Madison County a great place for students. http://www.waff.com/Global/story.asp?S=23755637 Daniel Adamek pleads for mental health care reform in wake of son Christian's suicide (photos, videos) http://whnt.com/2013/10/22/father-of-sparkman-student-calls-for-more-awareness-about-mental-illness/ sponse here…
