While speaking to New Hampshire Republicans on April 30, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN06), a potential Republican presidential candidate, said that Americans' tax burden is similar to the Holocaust.  Specifically, she said that while "there is no analogy to that horrific action," the potential "loss of economic liberty" is a "flash point in history" for which future generations will demand answers, just like the Holocaust.  She further said, "we are seeing eclipsed in front of our eyes a similar death and a similar taking away. It is this disenfranchisement that I think we have to answer to."

While comparisons to the Holocaust are bad enough, making such a statement on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) is beyond the pale.

Bachmann must publicly apologize for her outrageous statement.  And if she isn't willing to do so on her own, the Republican House leadership must make her do so.

Apologize for comparing tax burden to Holocaust

Lady and gentlemen,

I was shocked to learn that on April 30, Congresswoman Bachmann told a group of New Hampshire Republicans that America's tax burden is "a similar death and a similar taking away" to the Holocaust.

While making any comparison at all to the Holocaust is outrageous by itself, the fact she did so on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day--when Jews around the world pause to remember that horror--is flat-out unacceptable.

I ask that Congresswoman Bachmann to publicly apologize for her divisive and ill-informed remarks. And if she doesn't do so, Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor should insist that she do so. Regardless of political stripe, making such a comparison has no place in civilized political discourse.
