California State Senate: Kill SB 635 (Extended Bar Hours in California)
California State Senate: Kill SB 635 (Extended Bar Hours in California)
The Issue
Each year, approximately 10,000 Californians die from excessive alcohol use; nearly half of these deaths are due to binge drinking. In 2010, there were 24,343 alcohol-related traffic injuries in the State. SB 635 -- a misguided bill that would allow communities to decide to extend liquor service at bars and restaurants from 2 a.m. until 4 a.m. -- would only contribute to the problem.
The U.S. Community Preventive Services Task force, an independent body of public health and medical experts, recommends against extending bar and restaurant hours to protect public health and safety.
Studies show that increasing the times that alcohol can be sold at bars and restaurants 2 hours or more leads to:
- More motor vehicle crashes
- More emergency room admissions
- More injuries and fighting
- More violence
Talk to any emergency department physician, 9-1-1 dispatcher, law enforcement professional, or bus driver about the unintended consequences of keeping the liquor flowing until 4 a.m. Senator Leno and others considering sponsoring this bill must consider the huge economic and social consequences of alcohol-related trauma and violence. The restaurant industry may benefit but at the expense of communities and families.
Please tell Senator Mark Leno that you oppose SB 635!
