The old growth redwood trees in Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve are endangered by the very people responsible for protecting them. The California Department of Parks and Recreation plans use backhoes, excavators, graders, bulldozers, dump trucks, and Horizontal Directional Drilling machines to drill wells and install a 3/4 mile long water pipeline through the valley floor.  The wells will pump millions of gallons of water per year from under the old growth trees to supply the human activities in the park.  Heavy equipment will injure the root systems and disrupt the delicate ecosystem which includes rare and endangered species.  Redwoods trees cannot adapt to loss of their usual oxygen and water supplies.  When sensitive roots are crushed or severed or when underlying water tables are drained, the roots can no longer supply enough moisture to the branches and the tree begins to die.   The old growth trees and their interlocking root systems have been living in the reserve for thousands of years. Don't let the actions of a few humans cause harm to this unique natural resource of global importance.
