Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is being threatened with more than $25 million in fines and other charges for financial mistakes made while the district was under state control. California Assemblymember Sandré Swanson has intervened and is working with State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and the State Controller's office to eliminate the fines and other charges.
The State is unfairly assessing OUSD more than $25 million for errors that occurred on its watch. Sign the petition below and tell California State Controller John Chiang to waive the fines and charges.
Oakland shouldn't have to pay millions for the State's mistake.

California State Controller: Don't Fine Oakland Schools Millions for the State's Mistake
Dear State Controller John Chiang,
Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is currently being threatened with more than $25 million in fines and other charges for financial mistakes made while the district was under state control.
It is absurd to require OUSD pay more than $25 million for someone else's mistake. The errors occurred on the State's watch and the State is responsible, not OUSD.
I urge you to immediately eliminate all fines and charges assessed to OUSD related to the time period when OUSD was under State Control.
