Preserve the Northwest Bronx: Bedford Park/Norwood/Van Cortlandt Village

The Issue

Bedford Park and Norwood are two working-class neighborhoods in the Northwest Bronx. In the past year it was proposed that the area be down-zoned- that is, the zoning would allow smaller buildings to preserve the character of the neighborhood. At present time three large buildings are being erected (Webster Avenue above 204 Street, North Mosholu Pkwy near Bainbridge Avenue, and South Mosholu Pkwy and Lisbon Place), as well as opening on Grand Concourse and Bedford Park. Our community, which formerly had many smaller buildings and homes, is being replaced at a rapid rate with larger-scale buildings, increasingly the population. The majority of the new projects are meant for affordable and supportive housing for formerly homeless/chronically mentally ill. The Bronx had traditionally been a dumping ground for facilities and services that other boroughs did not want. How much more can we take?
