Broaden the Torture Investigation
The Issue
[03/21/11 UPDATE: THIS PETITION IS STILL ACTIVE & LINKS STILL HOT. ]
VOTERS FOR PEACE PETITION
Today, a major step was made -- the Attorney General announced that he was appointing a special prosecutor to investigate torture.

While this is a major step forward, we are not satisfied. The Attorney General is selectively investigating torture in a limited number of cases and only examining the actions of low-level interrogators. This violates the Convention Against Torture. As we told the Attorney General in a letter I wrote earlier this month on behalf of Voters for Peace and more than 150 other organizations, the Convention Against Torture requires all acts of torture be investigated and all those involved be held accountable by being prosecuted.

We are going to keep the pressure on. We want a full investigation and we do not want policy makers or lawyers who facilitated torture protected.

Broaden the Torture Investigation
Your announcement on August 24th to investigate some torture cases is insufficient. You cannot selectively prosecute torture.
You are required by law, according to the Convention Against Torture, to investigate all cases of torture. And, these investigations cannot be limited to low-level interrogators. The investigation must include policy makers who were responsible for the decision to torture as well as lawyers who used their law license to shield torturers. Without the policy makers and lawyers torture would not have taken place. They should be held accountable for their actions.
Please broaden the investigation so that the Department of Justice obeys the law and holds those responsible accountable for their actions. Politics should not come before the rule of law.
