 Two of the most popular government programs in American History wereFranklin D. Roosevelt's 'Alphabet Soup' Public Works Programs. President Roosevelt brought together two wasted resources -- young men and land with the establishment of the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933 

Background on the CCC.

During the 1930s under the Franklin Roosevelt administration, one of many three-letter programs, collectively referred to as the Alphabet Soup, was the Civilian Conservation Corps.

The CCC recruited only single young men (The 21st century CCC now would enroll women!) and single or married WW1 War Veterans for work on conservation projects in national, state, municipal parks, forestsand elsewhere. They lived on site in camps similar to those of the military in the field.

The CCC demonstrated that there was absolutely no conflict between the preservation of the environment and the creation of jobs! It was the most successful federal work program in history, and the government's most lasting environmental effort as well. 

The CCC was a very worthwhile project not only for the good of the country but also for the lasting benefit it provided for the men involved, who would have otherwise have been unemployed during our worst depression.

In broad terms, I assert that modern society, acting through its government, owes the definite obligation to prevent the starvation or dire want of any of its fellow men and women who try to maintain themselves, but cannot.

 With the WPA program, millions more jobs were created in 1935 with the establishment of the Works Progress Administration!

Both programs proved durable and essential and these New Deal programs brought real relief to most Americans.

These proven jobs programs are needed now!

Currently there are two bills in Congress to provide for the creation of jobs.

Mr President you can make these a reality by Executive Order or shepherd them through Congress,

HR 494 - the 21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps Act sponsored by Marcy Kaptur OH-9.

SB.1517 - the 21st Century WPA Act sponsored by Frank Lautenberg - NJ.
