For several years in the 1990s, sections of the Grand Concourse were closed to cars every Sunday from July thru November. Free from car traffic, residents used the roadway to socialize, play, bike and walk. However, despite the popularity of these events Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ended Summer Streets Sundays in 1996. 

We propose to bring back Summer Streets as a way to provide much-needed open space safe for pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders and rollerbladers. Everyone will be invited to come out and play, exercise, eat outdoors, dance, and have plain old fun using the Concourse to develop a sense of community with neighbors in creative ways.

We want to bring back Summer Streets for several weekends.
