After receiving feedback from almost 700 Change.org members, Old Milwaukee of has taken down all of their billboard ads with the offensive slogan, "One Free Girl With Every Can."
Change.org members pilloried the ads for "promoting women as objects to be owned" and some vowed to boycott the products until the offensive ads came down.
On July 19th, Old Milwaukee's public relations department sent the following email to Change.org:
"In response to public feedback regarding a recent Canadian Old Milwaukee advertisement, the brand has chosen to pull from the marketplace all billboards displaying this ad. The ads were removed as of July 15, 2011. We recognize that the billboard in question is not to everyone’s taste and apologize for any offence we may have caused the Canadian public."
Another bad ad campaign bites the dust and one more advertising company learns that sexism doesn't sell. Thank you, as always, for making change!
Tell Old Milwaukee and Sleemans Brewing Company that their recent ad campaign is sexist, offensive and degrading . Not only is this offensive to women and girls but is also socially irresponsible to the men and young boys who see these ads. These billboards contribute to the issue of violence against women.
These ads are implying that women can be bought and sold, that women and girls are objects.
We demand an apology and we want a retraction of all the ads.
Let Old Milwaukee know that there is nothing funny about these ads.
Current Old Milwaukee Ad Campaign
Greetings,
The current Old Milwaukee Ad Campaign that includes, but is not limited to the billboard "free girl with every can" is offensive, degrading and socially irresponsible. Not only is this offensive to women and girls but it is irresponsible to men and in particular young boys who will read the billboards that are out in the community. These ads contribute to the larger issue in our society that is violence against women.
Women can not be bought or sold and are not objects or possessions that can just be given away.
How are parents suppose to respond to their children when they ask what the billboards mean?
This ad contravenes the ALCOHOL AND GAMING COMMISSION OF ONTARIO LIQUOR ADVERTISING GUIDELINES: LIQUOR SALES LICENSEES AND MANUFACTURERS
• (3) does not imply that consumption of liquor is required in obtaining or enhancing: (a) social, professional or personal success, (b) athletic prowess, (c) sexual prowess, opportunity or appeal, (d) enjoyment of any activity, (e) fulfilment of any goal, or (f) resolution of social, physical or personal problems
It also contravenes the Advertising Standards Canada Gender Portrayal Guidelines.
• Caution should be taken to ensure that the overall impression of an ad does not violate the spirit of gender equality even though the individual elements of the ad may not violate any particular guideline. 2. While the Guidelines pertain to both women and men, some clauses are particularly directed to the portrayal of women. Men and women are not at equal risk of being negatively portrayed and these Guidelines recognize that fact.
We are asking that Sleemans Brewing and Old Milwaukee remove these ads immediately and issue an apology to the communities in which they are present.
