Lundbeck, a Danish based pharmaceutical firm, is the main manufacturer and supplier of pentobarbital, now quickly being adopted as the single drug utilized in lethal injections in the United States. Lundbeck refuses to take effective action in regards to the use of pentobarbital in executions.

            Lexapro®, which was developed by Lundbeck and is licensed to Forest Labs, is Lundbeck’s major revenue source. Their sales of pentobarbital are negligible compared to that of Lexapro®.

             If Lundbeck were to cease production and sales of pentobarbital, it would virtually halt executions in the United States.

             This is due to the lack of availability of sodium thiopental, a drug used in the three-drug lethal injection protocol. U.S. based pharmaceutical company Hospira has admirably stopped production of sodium thiopental in view of the fact they could not guarantee countries where the drug was manufactured that it would not be used in executions.

             This leaves Lundbeck as the sole manufacturer and supplier of drugs for executions in the United States.           

              Until Lundbeck addresses this issue, all Lundbeck pharmaceuticals and their associated products, such as Lexapro®, should be boycotted.
