The Boston Red Sox, inspired by 12-year-old Sam Maden’sChange.org petition signed by more than 9,000 fans, became the third Major League Baseball team to release an It Gets Better video in the last month, following fan-driven petition campaigns on Change.org’s platform for social change.

“Bullying is something that has touched many of our lives either personally or through someone we love,” said Susan Goodenow, Red Sox Senior Vice President of Public Affairs/Marketing, in a team statement. “We are proud of dedicated Red Sox fans like 12-year-old Sam Maden who took the courageous step recently to publicly stand up against bullying of LGBT youth, and we are honored to join Sam and others throughout Red Sox Nation in support of the It Gets Better Project.”

Why This Is Important

Every day, gay and lesbian teens in Middle School and High School are made fun of and bullied. It's sad that some of them are bullied so badly, they decide to commit suicide.  Recently, a petition much like this one was created to ask the San Francisco Giants to make an "It Gets Better" video. The Giants announced that they will make a video against bullying. We can do the same.

My name is Sam, I am 12 years old and my two friends and I really like the Boston Red Sox. If we can get a lot of signatures from our peers and teachers, we can possibly have the Red Sox make a video too!

Greetings, Boston Red Sox

Every day, gay and lesbian teens in middle school and high school are made fun of and bullied. It's sad that some of them are bullied so badly, they commit suicide. There are videos on YouTube called "It Gets Better" videos that tell young people it is OK to be who they are.

My name is Sam, I am 12 years old and my two friends and I really like the Boston Red Sox. We have looked up ways to change our community, and our country. On YouTube and Facebook you can see examples of "It Gets Better" videos. There are hundreds. So please can you make a video to help young gay and lesbian teens? You can help us save lives one teen at a time?

Recently, a petition much like this one was made to ask the San Francisco Giants to make a video. We can do the same. My favorite baseball team is the Boston Red Sox, and I want to hear you tell teens that "It Gets Better."
