Berlin Zoo: To vastly improve the condition of the animal enclosures

Berlin Zoo: To vastly improve the condition of the animal enclosures

The Issue

Large cats (lions, leopards etc) are currently being kept in indoor enclosures just a few feet wide, with caged or glass fronts, while the general public stand two feet from them. The animals spend all day pacing their tiny enclosures and repeating odd actions, which as we know are signs of madness. Zoos are obviously an unnatural setting for these animals, but the conditions provided at the minute in Berlin Zoo are nothing short of cruelty.

I have never seen such sadness in an animal's eyes as I did in one of the lions in Berlin Zoo, as he paced and roared in his tiny cage, with people crowding around him, screaming and taunting him.
Its not just the cats in the indoor enclosures, other animals such as the polar bears, in their larger, outdoor enclosure were also showing signs of madness through pacing and repeating actions. Thus proving that its not just the enclosures that are unsuitable, that they may also be mistreated.
I visited Berlin Zoo in July 2013 when I witnessed this. I thought maybe it was just appalling on the day i visited for whatever reason, but several months later I heard a friend visited the same zoo and I asked about the cats well being, she confirmed that their conditions had not changed.
If no one stands up for these incredible, unfairly treated animals, nothing will change.
